When Juniper Beach Water District completed the meter replacement project, the new "smart" meter registers have the capability to allow customers to monitor their water usage. With this in place, each customer can now view and manage water use through the website EyeOnWater. EyeOnWater is a consumer engagement application that goes beyond traditional water billing statements to connect utilities and their customers like never before. EyeOnWater enables the utility customer to view and understand their usage profile through easy-to-understand consumption graphs and provides a simple method to establish alerts to better manage their water use. Customers can set alerts to be notified when usage is higher than normal. which could signal that you have a leak somewhere in the plumbing systems of the residence.
To set up your EyeOnWater account, you'll need your account number, which you can find on your water utility bill. Once your account is set up, you'll be able to track your water usage by hour, day, week, month, and year. And once you've established your average usage, you can set an alert to notify you when your usage is higher than normal, which could signal that you have a leak somewhere in your plumbing system.

Setting the Parameters for Leak Alerts
For most residential users, EyeOnWater and JBWD recommend setting the "hourly flow exceeds" parameter to 1 gallon/hour. The "hourly continuous flow drops below" parameter is typically used for commercial properties with constant water usage and should generally not be used for homes.
Setting the "Hourly flow exceeds" Parameter (Leak Alert)
For a standard residential account, the flow type should be set to Intermittent Flow, as normal homes have periods of time (e.g., overnight) with no water usage.
Recommended Value: Set the threshold to 1 gallon/hour (GPH). This low setting helps detect common, small household leaks such as dripping faucets or running toilets, which might otherwise go unnoticed.
How it works: An alert will be sent if water flows continuously above this limit for 24 consecutive hours.
Customization: You can adjust this value if needed (some recommend between 1 to 5 GPH). Setting it too low might result in frequent alerts if your normal usage patterns are close to zero gallons per hour, and setting it higher may miss smaller leaks.
Setting the "Hourly continuous flow drops below" Parameter
This parameter is part of the Continuous Flow alert setting, which is intended for meters where water is expected to be flowing 24/7 (e.g., certain commercial buildings, climate control systems).
For residential users: You should typically leave this option blank or avoid selecting the "Continuous Flow" type altogether.
How it works: If you were to set a minimum threshold, an alert would be triggered if the flow dropped below that amount for 24 consecutive hours, which would be inappropriate for a home where flow is expected to drop to zero when no one is using water.
For detailed, step-by-step instructions on setting up your alerts, you can typically find a setup guide on your water utility provider's website, or access the general instructions on the EyeOnWater Help page.
